SECRET's "Poison" stage outfits still cause controversy

Article: SECRET, the amount of exposure on their stage outfits has been toned down... but still nano hot pants + spread leg dance

Source: Newsen via Nate

The source throws me off a bit but I think their outfits are controversial enough (to netizens) that they're overlooking it to comment on how SECRET needs to tone it down more.

1. [+215, -59] If I didn't know what the article was about, I'd think that this was about a porno video judging from the screencaps alone. I loved SECRET during their Moonlight days.. so it upsets me that they're being forced to wear clothing like this to stand out as a Korean idol singer, since such is reality. And oh yeah, I won't be watching T-ara no matter how much they come on TV, so let's get rid of them.

2. [+167, -42] Nano ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ nano hot pants ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ What is that, new technology????? Nano shorts?? ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

3. [+135, -65] They did kind of tone down the skin exposure but it's still kind of funny ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

The other comments in the top 5 best replies etc basically talk about how it's too much and how they look like show girls. There's a lot of sl*t shaming going on and sexual comments being justified because the girls are "asking for it" being dressed like that.

Yeahhh, it's a mess. I'm definitely not defending these comments but to add on to what some readers have been saying about seeing issues from the views of Korean cultures, I think it's worth noting that viewers are more sensitive to issues like this because unlike i-fans, who can pick what performances and shows to watch online, Koreans are watching these shows on public broadcasts with their families at night (sometimes whether they like it or not if they don't have cable)... and this along with the fact that Korean culture is conservative in general, I hope you can kind of see that while some of these comments are not at all justified, it's at least seen as an issue by the general public.

  1. At least the top comments you translated aren't as negative as I thought it will be. Seems like they like Secret but they just hate the outfits this time around.

  2. If this looks like a porno video to them, I feel that they're not using their hyper-fast Internet connections to their fullest extent.

LOL at the T-ara bashing. It's cute how they think Newsen are paying attention.

  3. if it was their dear oppas thrusting hips, tearing shirts showing abs, thrusting their genitals up and down, the response from knetizens would be much different... SIGH

"AHH oppas comeback Daebak! SO SEXY I CAN'T SLEEP"

    1. sigh...these types of comments are so over-used.....
if a male idol was thrusting their hips, the top comments would talk about the double standard......I swear, there's more talk about how there'll be a double standard than there actually is.

Besides, snsd wore nano shorts and I didn't see people calling them a slut....but korea is determined to love snsd no matter what so....

  4. The third and two last caps are... urgh, yes a bit provocative.
I love SECRET, I mean, like they're my fav girl group. And I really loved 'Love is Move', they were sexy but in a completely different way. I like Poison but I'm not a fan of the concept :/
I can't agree with netizens who call them slut, but I understand, with the circumstances mentioned.

  7. Korean netizens are misogynist? Gee, never would have picked that...

  8. ^It's a female misogynist. I believe most of those rants come from fangirls. As a fanboy, i won't complain

  9. I've seen screen cap of the spread leg dance and shit look awkward as f*ck that it's not "sexy" at all. I'm against slut shaming so I disagree to what they're saying but I really do think Secret should at least change the leg spread choreo. =__='

  10. Well, SNSD was bashed for their shorts. Kara was bashed for their recent Pandora performance.

Isn't surprising to see a uprising girl group bashed on the choice of clothing their management made them wear.

For international netizens who obviously come from different cultures, I'm surprised to not see any any supporters against the hateful ones that spew out the slut vocabulary.

It doesn't make a person a slut because they're dressed in something so short.
It's like comparing a girl being raped because she was wearing clothes.

  11. The outfits aren't the problem, they're almost as long (if not longer) than Kara's. The problem is the spread leg move.

I think these people probably like the dance move, that's why they want them wearing pants so it wouldn't be as awkward.

I want Secret to try wearing pants without the jacket for a performance just to see the reaction.

Their legs look amazing though, probably why they don't want to change the choreo or wear longer pants. They obviously worked super hard to get their lean and tone legs, so of course they want to show them off ^^

  12. Which girl group hasn't used hot pants?

  13. The way the camera was facing upwards is what makes it look even more disgusting lol.. shame on you pervy cameramen XD

  14. "There's a lot of sl*t shaming going on and sexual comments being justified because the girls are "asking for it" being dressed like that."

Oh...oh. Oh dear. That's messed up. But aside from that I see where they're coming from. The concept is a bit much (clothes + dance = bad combo. If the dance were toned down I don't think people would really care about the wardrobe). During "Madonna" they were sexy, but there was a classiness about it.

  15. Kara's outfits are just as short but they aren't being bashed are they? Instead people talk about how Newsen is bought out by posting those articles.

It's not just the outfit but the spread leg dance + those outfits make it worst...

    ReplyDelete
  17. ^ It's one of two thing, either the dance or the shorts should be altered.

We already saw a more discrete version of the dance. I wanna see them with suit pants and more revealing tops (to give it the little sexiness appeal with the longer pants).

  18. actually the networks do censor male idols when they expose their chests. Rain had to wear that ugly vest when he was promoting so it wouldn't show his nipples. He could only take his shirt off on mnet because it was cable

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe the outfit is not going to be this much trouble if they change the dance....

    ReplyDelete
  20. They shouldn't have to change anything for anybody - outfits or clothes. If people don't like it they can not fucking watch it. This seems to be a foreign concept to South Korea.

  21. ^looks like you didn't read the explanation at the bottom. " I think it's worth noting that viewers are more sensitive to issues like this because unlike i-fans, who can pick what performances and shows to watch online, Koreans are watching these shows on public broadcasts with their families at night (sometimes whether they like it or not if they don't have cable)"

  22. Why do I feel that Secret's the new Newsen target now that Kara's ending their promo?

I was wondering when this would come up when there was an "outrage" about Kara showing their backs for a few seconds while leg spread move is more "sexual". So yes, K-netizens were bound to have opinions about this.

  23. The comments really does make K-netizens sound innocent and pure.
