Psy's past 'anti-America' song catches up with him

Article: Psy releases official statement about anti-America song

Source: OSEN via Nate

1. [+452, -84] Psy is realistic. Either way, I fully understand why Americans would be angry about this considering that Psy generalized the entire American army in his lyrics. Apologizing was the realistic decision, and it was right of him to thank freedom of speech because what he said is justified under that.

2. [+367, -93] I'm glad he specifically apologized for "inflammatory and inappropriate language"... It would've been a bit... if he had apologized for singing "that song"

3. [+300, -72] There will probably be people who will still hate on him even after Psy said all this. Understand that Psy did not apologize for the song but for his choice of language. It was a realistic apology.

4. [+49, -12] Yeah, I agree that he should've apologized for generalizing the entire American army like that.

5. [+45, -8] Looking at this coldly, I see it as the end of his career considering he's an Asian artist talking about slowly killing American soldiers... Americans have the utmost respect for their soldiers.

  1. It doesn't matter how good PSY's next song is, he's not going to be invited back on all those morning shows and Ellen and shit, that's for sure. Ironically, his best hope at this point is if O'Reilly and Limbaugh go apeshit on him next week... then maybe at least the left-leaning half of America might have some sympathy for him. He was probably not going to be able to repeat his Macarena Moment anyway, but I'm still sad to see him go out like this. Worse than that, this debacle will probably taint the debut of any other K-pop stars who try to break into the US, at least for the next few months.
    Ugh - what a bummer!

  2. Even Korean understand that what psy did was bad. Meanwhile in k-pop forums aka allkpop " he didnt mean it it was 8 years ago" "they deserve it". Pay has a right to condeman the us army but kill their children and family? Who the fuck is he? What's next? That 9/11 was also deserved? So disappointed that k-pop fangirls r so enamoured by k-pop and the glamoure that they turn stupide and evil

  3. It was fun while it lasted. Maybe we can move on from gangnam style now.

  4. I'm fine with him showing anger towards the U.S. for what happened. We've done some messed up things in our time. The way he went about his frustrations, however, is unjustifiable. Wishing death upon millions is never okay in any context. He seems like such a nice, chill dude, so I hope he's genuinely sorry. A lot of people who say what he said tend to feel that way for years with no intent on changing, so you never really know these days.

  5. Does he even had a legit US career other than being known as a fat and uncool Asian guy doing a horse dance?

    wait what?

  7. netizenbuzz, I read in other forums that PSY has drugs, prostitutes and military service scandals.. do you know something about it?

  8. He had a chance at a LMFAO-esque career, if that makes any sense.

  9. Kill those fucking Yankees who tortured the Iraqi POWs

And the fuckers who ordered them to torture

Kill their daughters mothers daughters-in-law fathers

Kill them slowly kill them painfully

  11. The more I read that, the less respect I have for him :|

  12. "Understand that Psy did not apologize for the song but for his choice of language. It was a realistic apology. "

    THIS

What Psy felt when he sang those lyrics was real, and even if he apologized for the song, it doesn't change the fact that the anger towards America was real. It was there. He felt it. A lot of people did. That's why I'm impressed that Psy was sensible enough to apologize for the harsh language.

Granted, the lyrics were really scary (all those 'kill's...) and there will be people who will hate him for it, but I think people who defend Psy (and hate on America) should also try to understand why Americans would be angry over this. Just think, if those words were directed to your country's soldiers, how would you feel? Plus, like what another poster had said here, "Wishing death upon millions is never okay in any context."

  15. Oh shit...He could be done in the U.S. Not too sure.

  16. I can understand him being angry at the US soldiers or the government in general for their acts but:

"Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law, fathers. Kill them slowly kill them painfully"

That is totally uncalled for and really disgusting. I don't see how he could even sing that in the first place. How would he feel like if someone sang a song telling people to kill his parents and daughters "slowly and painfully"

  17. if anything the usa helped south korea a lot with where they are today.. it was only like 60 years ago and they were considered a 3rd world country.. look at where south korea is today, you would have never guessed that

    1. USA didn't help us with anything. We are where we are right now because of our own people and love for our country.

  18. with other kpop idols that have done stop negative things people will also dig up their racist pasts.. suppose if it was.... super junior(shindog oprah blackface) or b2st (lee gikwang blackface)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh I definitely agree. It's one thing to show frustration but his word choice was far too extreme for my taste. The U.S.did some crazy stuff but like you said, they helped a lot as well.

  20. I don't watch tv so I don't really know how big this has gotten. All that's about saying they should die was uncalled for no matter how angry or upset he was.
Either way if he is/was racist I couldnt care less. Hate whoever you hate, love whoever you want, think what you please, to me personally it makes No difference. Just keep making more catchy music please.
But yes I do believe ppls anger is justified.
& someone above said now if any other kpop artist makes it there they're probably try to pull up some racist material (ie. Blackface ) well.... you gotta admit.. Korea's pretty racist...
or at least not very culturally sensitive.. ._.

  21. I understand PSY would be upset about the death of two Korean girls, but then again, his reaction seemed a bit far. The US was not engaged in battle with Korea, those young girls were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. For him to wish death upon all soldiers and their families is too much in my opinion. Esp considering US soldiers help protect Korea. America is not perfect, in no way shape or form, we do fucked up things that is true, but blame the government not men and women who risk their lives thinking they are protecting their country and the people they love. Regardless, America is in the most fucked up position out of every country in the world. We are the powerhouse, essentially and now we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We meddle in foreign affairs, people hate us. We don't, people hate us cause we're self-centered. We've created this presence and now we can't abandon it because it we do, shit might go through the roof. Sucks.

  22. Picture from Newsen and article from Osen. Lol..
Does 'Sen' mean news in Korean?

Anyway, considering how popular he became, it was only a matter of time before someone digs this up.

  23. u.s netizens can be very rude they don't leave their own star seven likes of justin bieber etc. for wrongdoings or antis even resort to cheap actions like egg throwing and all....so not sure psy will be able to overcome this...make no doubt psy is a phenomenal singer but this may cut out his music journey in america......bad mouthing soldiers which america is very sensitive about .....with those awful lyrics he may bring a end to his own career.....i am a fan of yours...so hope you can come out of this.... i feels people should put aside his controversies aside becoz he always had been embroiled in them be it korea or america..... but his singing and dancing skills stand out....but will understand them if they look the other way.............

    ReplyDelete
  24. His choice of words were wrong, but he is justified in his dislike/hatred for America at that time, the military have done of messed up stuff when stationed in South Korea

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't even like the guy (omg the blasphemy), but his apology was pretty respectable imo. It would have been pretty ingenuine for him to backpedal and try to kiss ass because he obviously meant what he said at the time. While I can empathize with the sentiment behind the song, his word choice was obviously really fucked up.

  26. Well... there WERE American soldiers that tortured POWs. It was all over the news for weeks.

And let's not forget the brutality of the Vietnam War, the unnecessary War Against Terror, etc. etc.

God, George W. Bush is a fucking moron. -___-

  32. Agreed. Someone mentioned that the lyrics should be taken in the same vein as Ice Cube's "Black Korea," where he said he'd pretty much kill all Koreans in the U.S. Both songs are pretty much emotional responses to deaths that have happened in their respective countries. Ice Cube wrote it because a 15-year-old black girl was going to buy some orange juice at a Korean-owned store and the store owner thought she was stealing it (she didn't see the money that the girl had in her hand) so they got into a bit of scuffle, where the store owner ended up shooting the girl in the back of the head at close range. Plus, the store owner ended up only paying a fine and serving community service, even though the murder was clearly unjustified. The deaths of those two Korean girls and the acquittals of the soldiers involved are pretty much parallel to that event so the sentiments are definitely justified. The lyrics are very over the top though.

  33. He IS done in the U.S. That much is very obvious.

  34. We are not the only country with a mess up history the lyrics were referring to death of a korean who was killed in Afghanistan by Terrorist group because Korean sent Soldier to Iraq.

  35. It's the end. Scooter Braun (or whatever his name is) is probably regretting signing up PSY. He should have done his homework

  36. PSY kinda opened the wall of Kpop groups/kpop breaking into the US...but is he the one who will close it too?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm actually surprised by the k netizen reactions. I guess it really does show that most koreans react to tragedies with high emotion at the time. I don't think he's a bad person for writing those lyrics even though they come across as horribly violent. I thought it was obvious that he was talking about a specific part of the army.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Imo, being hated because we're self centered seems less serious alternative than being hated for meddling in things we had no business meddling in. (Iraq) So honestly a lot of it was brought on ourselvves

  39. Some of the dumbasses here calling ~butthurt and ~pressed don't have to work to enroll for Korean colleges though. lol. You're just mad that people are shitting on your idols.

  40. In his healing camp episode, he actually talked about it. He was actually arrested for Marijuana and his dad had to bail him out. It's definitely one of the more interesting episodes of "Healing Camp which is usually super boring. Psy led a pretty interesting life.

He talks about growing up a rich kid in Gangnam. How his dad is North Korean, and creating and selling pirated cd's to Korean stores in Boston to pay for schooling in the States at Berkeley college after he was finanially cut off.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, the only way he would have made it in the U.S. would've been if he somehow topped or even reached the success of Gangnam Style. This could be a blessing in disguise.

    ReplyDelete
  42. but aren't the USA still stationing there?

  43. One hit wonder, I knew it

  44. you can google that. though the prostitute thing is new to me.

  45. Yes, but in turn since we've become so reliant on other countries, it could affect trade. That's the hard spot. And Iraq was Bushs fucking selfish ass wanting to get oil for money, nothing more nothing less. He just tried to pass it off as some patriotic movement cause he's full of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I usually dont get offended easily, but those lyrics truly put something in my heart. I really hope his apology is sincere and he is not saying this only because he wants to sell his music more here.
